KRG UK Representation hosts its Summer Reception at the UK Parliament

Mr Karwan Jamal Tahir, KRG High Representative to the United Kingdom welcomed more than 190 key figures included political, diplomatic, business, NGO, Iraqi and Kurdish communities at the KRG UK Representation’s summer reception hosted in the UK parliament in partnership with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Kurdistan Region to recognise the deep and broad links between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom in areas of politics, economic, education and culture.

Speaking at the reception, Jack Lopresti MP, the Chairman of APPG on the Kurdistan Region said: “the APPG is determined to find ways to reduce the obstacles, especially easing the terms of the Foreign Office’s travel advice, encourage working with partners to try establishing direct flights with the UK, sending an official trade mission”. “We welcome the KRG political leadership on an official visit to meet our leaders and our new Prime Minister in the few weeks as soon as possible.” He added.

In his remarks, High Representative Karwan said: “this gathering is a true symbol of our partnership and shared ambitions for the future at this special time of the year. We are grateful for the UK’s efforts to safeguard Kurdish rights and support a strong KRG. With respect to parliamentary affairs, High Representative Karwan saluted the members of both Houses of Parliament in demonstrating interests in Kurdistan through raising around 90 questions and securing two parliamentary debates this year specific to Kurdistan and the plight of minorities displaced by the fight against Daesh.

The Rt Hon Sir Alan Duncan KCMG MP, Minister of State for Europe and the Americas at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office regarded the presences of parliamentarians and members of the Kurdish community at the reception as a great illustration of the strength of support in this country for the Kurdistan Region and importantly for the historical partnership.

The Minister said: “We welcome the recent election of Nechirvan Barzani as President and Masrur Barzani as Prime Minister and it is important that all parties in the Region came together to deliver for the people of Iraqi Kurdistan.” He also expressed his delight for the development of relations between Baghdad and Erbil.

Dr Salih Husain Ali AL-Tamimi, Iraqi Ambassador to the UK praised the role of Global coalition members in countering ISIS in Iraq. Ambassador Dr AL-Tamimi said: “With the cooperation of all Iraqi components, Iraq was able to defeat the evil of humanity.” We aim to continue strengthening the cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil to ensure growth and prosperity for Iraq.

The reception was attended by Rt Hon Dame Rosie Winterton MP, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons and a number of MPs and member of the House of Lord, H.E. NadhimZahawi MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families, the British Consul General to Erbil, James Thornton.
