Minister Safeen Muhsin Dizayee Meets UK Defence Minister to Strengthen Security and Military Cooperation

28 April 2026, at the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence, Safeen Muhsin
Dizayee, Head of the KRG’s Foreign Relations Department, and Karwan Jamal
Tahir, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s High Representative to the UK, were
received by UK Defence Minister Lord Vernon Coaker.
During the meeting, Lord Coaker welcomed the
longstanding friendship between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom,
expressing appreciation for continued coordination between the two sides. He
also reaffirmed the UK’s respect for the Kurdistan Region’s autonomy,
particularly in light of the current regional sensitivities.
Discussions focused on security and defence
developments in the region, including recent attacks on the Kurdistan Region by
internal Iraqi militias, as well as the implications of the recently announced
US–Iran ceasfire. Lord Coaker underlined the importance of strengthening
military coordination between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom in
response to evolving regional challenges.
The talks also addressed broader political
developments, including the formation of a new federal government in Iraq and
relations between Erbil and Baghdad. Attention was given to how regional
dynamics may impact Iraq’s internal stability, alongside discussions on the
formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister
Dizayee expressed appreciation for the continued support and engagement of UK
defence institutions, highlighting efforts to reinforce stability in Iraq and
support a strong and secure Kurdistan Region.
