London, United Kingdom (uk.gov.krd)- The Kurdistan Regional Government United Kingdom Representation facilitated a virtual meeting for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Kurdistan Region with Dr Rewas Fayaq, the Speaker of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament and Deputy Speaker, Hemin Hawrami.
APPG Chair Rt Hon Robert Halfon MP thanked the KRG UK Representation for arranging a virtual delegation to support their forthcoming report on KRG-UK bilateral ties.
The KRG High Representative to the United Kingdom, Mr Karwan Jamal Tahir introduced the Speaker, who underlined democratic and economic deficits due to partial enactment of the Iraqi constitution and an unstable energy market outlook. Dr Rewas highlighted the KRG’s efforts in responding to risks and challenges in relations with the Federal Government and neighbouring countries. On the domestic level, she said: “The KRG’s Cabinet has implemented the Reform Bill which includes a series of measures designed to provide more certainty and accountability on salaries, pensions, and allowances for public servants.”
On security matters, the Deputy Speaker of Kurdistan Parliament, Hemin Hawrami spoke of security threats facing the Kurdistan Region and underscored the importance of the effort of the Federal government in increasing security and stability to safeguard its sovereignty.
On COVID-19, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker shared the KRG’s responses to tackle the pandemic and support the economy. APPG members debated questions on the KRG’s relations with the neighbouring countries and the potential of the Region’s agriculture.
