London, United Kingdom, www.uk.gov.krd. An event marking the 38th anniversary of the Anfal campaign and the chemical bombardment of Halabja was held in Lambeth Council, bringing together senior officials, local leaders and members of the Kurdish diaspora.

The commemoration, organised by Lambeth Council, was attended by Karwan Jamal Taher, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s High Representative to the United Kingdom, and Dr Saleh Al-Tamimi, Iraq’s Ambassador to the UK, alongside several councillors, community figures and supporters of the Kurdish people.

Speakers at the event paid tribute to the victims of the Anfal campaign and the Halabja chemical attack, condemning the atrocities committed against the Kurdish population and describing them as acts of genocide.

In his address, Mr. Taher thanked Councillor Sarbaz Barzinji and Lambeth Council for organising the memorial and for their efforts to establish a Peace Monument in the borough’s gardens. The monument, he said, serves as a tribute to the victims of genocide in the Kurdistan Region and stands as a symbol of the strong ties between the Kurdish and British people.

“It sends a message to every Kurd that your story matters, your pain is seen, and your peace is our priority,” he said.

Commemorations of the Anfal campaign and the Halabja attacks are held annually across the United Kingdom, reflecting a continued commitment to remembrance and awareness. These events play a vital role in ensuring that Anfal is not confined to history, but remains a living lesson for the international community. It also stress that raising awareness is key to preventing future atrocities, underscoring the importance of vigilance and the ongoing pursuit of peace.
