On the occasion of International Women's Day, the Representation of the Kurdistan
Regional Government, in partnership with the Mariam Khan House of Art, hosted a
special event titled “Women: Strength and Philosophy – Advocacy for the Rights
of Women and Girls.”
The event brought together members of the Kurdish community in the
United Kingdom to celebrate the achievements of Kurdish women and highlight
their contributions across academic, humanitarian, and advocacy fields.
A central feature of the programme was a panel discussion featuring
three distinguished Kurdish women: Taban Shorsh, Payiz Mahmoud, and Dr. Samal
Mani. The panellists shared insights from their personal and professional
journeys, reflecting on the challenges faced by Kurdish women in the UK and the
ways they have worked to overcome them while representing the Kurdish community
positively within British society.
Moderated by Yasmin Atroushi, the discussion focused on empowerment
and inspiration, encouraging Kurdish women in attendance to continue striving
toward their ambitions and to strengthen advocacy for women’s rights and
representation in Britain.
The panel also addressed the issue of violence against women and
girls, highlighting the importance of confronting what remains a hidden social
taboo in many communities. Participants discussed the role of community
organisations and advocacy groups in promoting women’s rights and supporting
the progress and achievements of Kurdish women in the UK.
In his remarks, High Representative Karwan Jamal Tahir,
congratulated participants and Kurdish women worldwide on the occasion of
International Women’s Day. He emphasised that women and girls hold a respected
and vital place in Kurdish society, noting that understanding the strength and
resilience of Kurdish women today requires recognising the challenges they have
overcome in pursuit of dignity and equality.
“They have become a powerful force for change,” he said, describing
Kurdish women as the “heartbeat of their people.”
During the event, the KRG Representation presented commemorative
gifts to the panellists and to the chairwoman of the Mariam Khan House of Art
in recognition of their contributions to the community.
The event concluded with an artistic presentation by Zeno Durar,
who showcased several works reflecting cultural and social themes.
