Birmingham, UK,
www.gov.uk.krd. High representative Karwan Jamal Tahir attended the Second
Birmingham Kurdish Film Event on Friday 25th October along with a
delegation from the KRG UK Representation.
The cultural event, held at
Cineworld, Birmingham, commenced with a reception at which the High
Representative, Karwan Tahir, greeted and thanked the event's directors and
curators and many individuals from the Kurdish diaspora.
The first day of the Second
Birmingham Kurdish Film Event screened two films: the short film ‘I am Sami’
and ‘Aluda’. These two films, contrasting in their style and themes, convey the
broad talent among Kurdish film directors and actors. ‘I am Sami’ addresses the
trauma and intricacies of a war-torn history through the eyes of a young boy,
Sami. Meanwhile, ‘Aluda’ depicts the contemporary struggles of an actor who
battles with an addiction that consumes his life.
Inside the theatre, Daro Aziz,
director of the Birmingham Kurdish Film Event, welcomed the guests on behalf of
the board and organisers of the event. He mentioned the diverse range of films
which are screening at the event and that over the three-day event 10 films
will be screened, 4 of which are feature-length and 6 are short films. Furthermore,
following the success of the event, he noted plans to rename it a Kurdish film
"festival" next year to broaden its scale.
High representative, Karwan
Tahir, also addressed the guests and praised the efforts of the coordinators of
the event, especially Daro Aziz. He stressed the importance of the event in
showcasing Kurdish culture and promoting the Kurdish film industry. He also
noted that the KRG is proud to be one of main sponsors, and by doing so it is
carrying out its duty of supporting the diaspora in the UK. He concluded by
noting the role that the KRG can play in creating important links between the
Kurdish film industry and leading British figures in the creative industries.
