London, United Kingdom, www.uk.gov.krd. Karwan Jamal Tahir, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) High Representative to the UK, recently met with Professor Nicola Walshe, Executive Director of the UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education. The meeting discussed collaborative efforts to enhance climate change and sustainability education in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

Professor Walshe began by reflecting on the recent visit of the UCL team to the Kurdistan Region, in which they aimed to discuss and assist in improving climate change and sustainability education. She emphasised the importance of facilitating dialogue among ministers, policymakers, school leaders, and teachers to understand the challenges and opportunities within this context collectively. Professor Walshe highlighted the need for ongoing collaboration to address these issues effectively, describing the visit as crucial.

High Representative Tahir underscored the pressing impact of climate change in the KRI in recent years. In response, the KRG has established a Board of Environmental Protection and Improvement to address climate change and the environmental threats facing the region. Additionally, the KRG has been proactive in embedding climate change awareness into the school curriculum, aiming to empower the new generation to actively protect the environment.

High Representative Tahir also called for environmental international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) to implement environmental protection projects in the KRI, which would support the KRG's efforts in mitigating the effects of climate change. He noted the KRG delegation's annual participation in COP events to stay informed about global climate phenomena and strategies.

The meeting concluded with a discussion of future cooperation between the KRG UK Representation and the UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education, aiming to further strengthen their joint efforts in addressing climate change challenges through education.
