KRG High Representative received the UK Thalassemia Society (UKTS)

Karwan Jamal Tahir, KRG High Representative to the UK, received Ms Romaine Maharaj, Executive Director of UKTS and Dr Banaz Star Sherko, Scientific Coordinator of the UKTS, in the company of Dr Faryad Hawezi and Bakhtiar Mam Sheikh, to discuss and assess the situation of thalassemia in the Kurdistan Region and the challenges and necessary steps to reduce the number of thalassemia carriers in the region.

First, the KRG High representative express gratitude to the UKTS and Dr Hawezi for their sympathy and willingness to assist the Kurdistan Region regarding thalassemia and how to manage it.

Then, Dr Hawezi highlighted the problems and shortcomings related to thalassemia in the Kurdistan Region and stated the importance of raising awareness of thalassemia and helping those suffering from it. He also suggested that opening more medical centres and organisation is crucial to treat thalassemia patients and regular checks to prevent future cases. Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of having qualified doctors and nurses in the field. Dr Hawezi expressed willingness to cooperate in promoting this issue.

Ms Romaine Maharaj, Executive Director of UKTS, summarised their work and services to thalassemia patients in the UK. They expressed their eagerness for cooperation and coordination with the thalassemia centres in the Kurdistan Region by delivering training courses for Kurdish doctors and nurses and providing other supplies and equipment to promote the services of these centres for thalassemia patients in the Kurdistan Region.

Finally, KRG High Representative thanked both sides for their willingness to assist thalassemia patients and thalassemia centres in the Kurdistan Region. and presented several proposals to build a bridge between the British Thalassemia Society and the Kurdistan Region to exchange new information and experiences to help in reducing thalassemia carriers in the region.
