2023 Nowruz in Kurdish new year reception held at the UK Speaker's House

The KRG UK High Representative, Karwan Tahir, joined friends from across the UK, Parliament, and the Kurdish diaspora at the first Nowruz celebration to be hosted by House of Commons Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, in parliament.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle opened by praising the massive contribution of the Kurdish diaspora to UK society and reiterated UK’s support for victims of last month’s earthquake in Turkey and Syria.



Alicia Kearns, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, stressed the importance of the relationship between the UK and their Kurdish allies, and that the UK would always support the Kurdish people in times of need, as the Kurds have always supported the UK in their time of need.  



Mr Karwan Tahir made a brief speech to thank all of those in attendance and to reiterate the importance of Nowruz and how it offers the opportunity to come together to celebrate this national and cultural heritage and should significantly strengthen the ties among people and bring the nations together to promote values of peace, coexistence and tenacity based on mutual respect.
Mr Tahir added, “ Newruz for us is a day of freedom from the oppression and dictatorship, and it is also a day of remembrance to remember the victims and all our fallen heroes that sacrificed and dedicated their lives to humanity.



Other speakers included Lord Bilimoria, who described what it was like as a Zoroastrian and a Kurd in the House of Lords.

The event was organized in conjunction with the Centre for Kurdish Progress and KRG UK.
