Duchess of Edinburgh becomes first royal to visit Kurdistan Region

London, United Kingdom, www.uk.gov.krd. The Duchess of Edinburgh, Her Royal Highness Sophie has become the first UK royal to visit Kurdistan Region. This visit was in support of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda (WPS), and to continue the Duchess' work to champion the survivors of conflict related sexual violence.

In her visit the Duchess along with her accompanying delegation, including the UK ambassador and Consul General in Erbil and Baghdad met a number of high-level officials including KRG Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, NGOs, and Yazidi women survivors.

KRG High Representative to the UK, Karwan Jamal Tahir who was a part of the visit stated that “Her Royal Highness's visit highlights not only her drive and support for the women and girls who are victims of terror but also encapsulates the friendship, support and shared values between the UK and Kurdistan Region.”
