London, United Kingdom, www.uk.gov.krd. The Kurdistan Regional Government High Representative to the UK, Mr Karwan Jamal Tahir hosted Steven Curtis, Associate Professor of International Relations and undergraduate students from London Metropolitan University for a discussion on the evolution of Kurdish national identity in the Middle East and the history of Kurds in Iraq from the inception of the Baath regime to the present.

High Representative Karwan explored the political, socioeconomic and ideological transformation of Kurds in Iraq. He stated that despite the Kurd’s long struggle with statelessness, the Kurdistan Region has successfully built ‘a de facto and autonomous self-rule in Iraq’ which has evolved as the most viable part of the country due to its achievements in the provision of economic growth and security, as well as development of agriculture and the extension of public goods production.

The discussion also focused on exchanging views on the importance diplomatic tools in the pursuit of foreign policy objectives.  The students also debated a range of questions related to the dynamics of Kurdish questions in the Middle East.
