  About the Kurdistan Regional Government

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is the democratically elected government of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq.

The Region’s other main institutions are the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP) and the Kurdistan Parliament . The Iraqi Constitution recognises the Region’s institutions, which are elected by popular vote and have significant law-making and executive powers. President Masoud Barzani has the highest executive authority in the Region.

The current coalition government, led by Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, The Kurdistani coalition government includes several political parties and reflects the diversity of the Region’s people and minorities.

The KRG is based in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, and administers the governorates of Erbil, Suleimaniah and Dohuk and other areas. It has 19 ministries.

The KRG’s policies

The KRG’s eighth cabinet has a programme of Renewal and Reconstruction for the region.

We are an emerging democracy and believe in continually working to improve our institutions, through training, reform and transparency initiatives. Our policy is to base our public spending decisions on the principles of balance and fairness.

The KRG continues to negotiate with Baghdad on outstanding issues such as the disputed territories and the oil and revenue sharing laws, which we believe can only be resolved successfully through a commitment to the democratically approved Iraqi Constitution.

The KRG believes that the Anfal genocide against the people of Kurdistan and
the Halabja chemical bombardment should never be forgotten and must never happen again. We lobby international decision makers for official recognition of the Anfal as an act of genocide, and for compensation to be paid to the victims.

We believe in a strong civil society and we encourage civil society and the media to play a more constructive role in promoting debate and informing public opinion.

Young people and women especially, who are great assets to our Region, will be given the encouragement and space to participate in political decisions.
