The KRG High Representative to the UK, Karwan Jamal Tahir, met with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Minister for the Middle East, Tobias Ellwood, to formally express the appreciation of the Kurdish leadership and the people of Kurdistan for their continued support to the Peshmerga in their fight against the terror organisation Daesh on behalf of the world. As well as updating Minister Ellwood on the latest political and economic developments in Kurdistan, Iraq and the wider region.
Mr Tahir said, “Our brave Peshmergas are defending humanity against terror with their lives. We are grateful for the first-class training the UK has provided to the Peshmerga and urge our partners to go further and equip them with the necessary advanced military equipment needed to defeat Daesh.”
Mr Tahir also emphasised the need for further humanitarian support to the almost 2 million Syrian Refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have sought a safe haven in Kurdistan.
In response, Minister Ellwood commended the bravery of the Peshmerga and the resilience of the people of Kurdistan and Iraq for breaking the myth of Daesh by standing up against them. He continued to praise the role of the KRG and the people of Kurdistan for their generosity in hosting such a large number of refugees and IDPs especially at a time the region is going through a challenging economic climate. Minister Ellwood reassured the KRG High Representative that the UK will continue to support the region at its time of need, as he said, “I would like to reaffirm my government’s commitment to the stability of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq during these challenging times and assure you we will support you to overcome these challenging times.”
